Interview with Django Walker
May 12, 2005 @ Wild Bill's in Beaumont

We met with Django and the guys from the band before their show at Wild Bill's. I have to thank Django and the rest of the guys for their willingness to talk with and spend time with us before and after their set. Here is the text of the interview.

...and all of your wildest dreams will come true.

He loves kids.

He knows how to deal with crap.

...and you'll have Django's protection.

Vote For Django!

We did!

RFT: Let's get the fun question out of the way first. What is the strangest thing that you've ever been asked to sign?

Django: Uhhhhh.... I'm a gentleman so... No, people come up to me all the time and ask me to sign Copenhagen cans, boots and all this stuff. Forehead! Some dude asked me to sign his forehead. He came up to me and said, "Dude, sign it. I mean it!" I told him, "If you want me to sign it, I'll definitely do it." He said, "Do it!" So I signed his forehead.

RFT: You guys are getting ready to hit the studio and record a new album and the word on the street is that it's going to have more of a rockabilly sound. What inspired you guys to do that?

Django: I wouldn't say rockabilly. I would say more rock. Like Cross Canadian. You know our first album was a little bit country and this one's going to be no fiddle, no steel. Nothing like that. It going to be organ and harmonica. It's going to be more of the rock stuff that you think of. Definitely keeping our country roots. It's a little more rock. It's what we've all grown up on. We're all rock guys or southern rock guys. We hope this record will portray that.

RFT: We have an all Texas music format and the Nashville versus Texas debate is stronger than ever. What do you see as the major difference between the Texas sound and the Nashville sound?

Django: We write our own music. It's true from the heart. You'll go listen to someone and you'll hear the song and it's from Nashville but someone else wrote it. You're like, "C'mon, man, that's not your true emotion. If your going to do that then write it yourself." That's always been my opinion. I respect people from Nashville because they work their tails off as hard as anybody else does in this business to make it. I think the difference is that we write our music. We don't really care. If we make it we make.  We're going to play these songs every night because they mean something to our heart.

RFT: Amen. Well, Nashville used to be considered the brass ring in country music. If you made it in Nashville then you were successful. Do you see that perception as changing?

Django: I've seen it from so many different levels and so many different bands. I mean there are so many bands out there in so many different genres. Look at Phish. Look at Widespread Panic. Look at Little Feat. They just went out, they played and did their thing. They didn't need it. They were grassroots. The record labels help. They do. They've got all the money. But good music is good music in the end. That's the bottom line. If you do good music, it will prevail. That's what we've stuck to. If we do good music, good songs, no matter what happens we'll be alright.

RFT: What is your favorite song to perform?

Django: One song, huh? Stoney by my Dad.

RFT: Why?

Django: It's a story telling song that's just so descriptive. You feel like your on the road with my Dad when he tells this story. Every emotion is put in to it.

RFT: You know they had the tribute to Billy Joe Shaver late last year for his 65th birthday. When Django turns 65 and they do a tribute to you what do you want your legacy to be?

Django:  I want great songwriters to be at my 65th birthday tribute. That's all I want. Great songwriters who respect me as a songwriter.  The Bruce Robisons and songwriters like that. People to come and play a song that I had written because it influenced them.

RFT: If you could make sure that one person was at your tribute, who would it be?

Django: Alive or dead?

RFT: Hopefully alive at that time.

Django: When I'm 65...? Everyone that I respect so much is so much older than me.

RFT: You know, people are living longer.

Django: I know. Then I would have to say my Dad.

RFT: Who do you definitely not want there?

Django: Big and Rich

The Bonus Round

RFT: How long in the business?

Django: 4 years

RFT: Favorite color?

Django: Hunter green

RFT: Favorite food?

Django: I like everything but if you can give me a big, home cooked cheeseburger then I'm set.

Look for Django, Keld, Greg, Steve & Rob to be coming at you with a new album in the near future. They just headed into the studio and we are looking forward to hearing the sophomore follow-up.
